Hong Kong boasts of strengths as well as potentials as a healthcare specialist center, the top health official of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ( HKSAR) government said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after a radio talk show, Secretary for Food and Health York Chow said the concept will build on the strengths of existing healthcare system in Hong Kong, such as professional standards, efficiency, clinical results and ethics.

"We should build on those ... rather than try to compete with other countries (and regions) in terms of cost," he said, adding that these would help attract visitors from outside Hong Kong in search of better healthcare specialist services.

Chow said Hong Kong doctors were well-known for their services in specialties like cardiology, trauma treatment, artificial joints and chronical illnesses.

The priority should be given to the private sector which has the flexibility required to tap such opportunities, and the health authorities will, where appropriate, provide them with the help needed in terms of training and resources.

Operators of local private hospitals can also try and partner with the mainland healthcare industry in exploring such opportunities, Chow added.
