As the landmark project of China's oceanic engineering equipment manufacturing, the world's sixth generation 3,000-meter deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform smoothly docked at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company on the morning of April 20. It signifies the project's entrance into the crucial stage of loading and final assembly.

Information shows that this deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform, the first one independently designed and built by China, is currently the most advanced in the world. It fills the gap in China's mega-sized deepwater drilling equipment projects.

This deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform is owned by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation. The 708 Research Institute of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company are jointly responsible for the detailed design and production design, with the latter contracting for the construction of the platform.

The drilling platform weighs 30,670 tons and has a deck of 114 meters in length and 79 meters in width. With a floor space equal to the size of a football pitch, it is 130 meters high from the bottom of the boat to the tip of the drilling derrick, which equals the height of 43-story building. The total length of the cable measures 650 kilometers, which equals the direct distance between Shanghai and Tianjin. The total cost of the project amounts to nearly 6 billion yuan, and is called the "airplane carrier" in the maritime engineering field.

At present, most of the world's verified maritime oil and gas resources are deposited in the seabed 3,000 meters below sea level. Core technologies of deep sea oil drilling used to be owned by a few countries in Europe and the Americas. For a long time, due to limited technology standards, China's offshore oil exploration could only be carried out in the nearby seas. Now, the situation will experience a fundamental change.
