A man set himself on fire Wednesday in the center of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, according to local police.
The incident occurred shortly after noon when the man, whose name was not given, doused himself with flammable liquid and set himself on fire near the Jiefangbei, a landmark statue.
The fire was later extinguished by firefighters.
The man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to a member of the municipal fire brigade.
Officials did not provide any reason for the man's actions. Local police started an investigation into the incident.
