Urban workers across China earned an average salary of 7,399 yuan during the first quarter of 2009, up by 875 yuan from the average salary of 6,524 yuan during the same period in 2008. The growth rate year-on-year has been 13.4 percent, down by 4.9 percentage points from the 18.3 percent increase in the first quarter of last year, according to the figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics on April 29.
The three industries that pay the highest average salary are the financial industry at 16,048 yuan, the information transmission, computer service and software industry at 13,972 yuan and the scientific research, technical services and geological exploration industry at 11,604 yuan.
The three industries that pay the lowest on average are the construction industry at 5,109 yuan, the accommodation, food and beverage industry at 5,125 yuan and the water conservancy, environment and public facilities management industry at 5,855 yuan. The ratio difference in average salary between the highest- and the lowest-paying industry is 3.1:1.
Compared with the first quarter of 2008, the growth rates in average salary displayed noticeable drops in every industry. Of these, the industry that includes resident services and other services recorded a growth rate of 4.4 percent, a drop of 15.7 percentage points from the 20.1 percent increase of the first quarter of last year.
The average salary earned by workers in the manufacturing industry rose 8.2 percent, a drop of 10.6 percentage points from the 18.8 percent growth rate of a year ago.
The financial industry saw an increase of 19.9 percent, down 10.4 percentage points from the 30.3 percent growth rate of the first quarter of last year, but nevertheless, the highest growth rate of all industries.
