At around 11 am on May 6, 350 tourists aboard the "Star of Asia" cruise ship set out from a quay in Zhuchi Harbor, Shantou, and sailed to Taiwan. This marked the launch of the first direct sea passenger transport link between Shantou in Guangzhou Province and Taiwan.
With the approval of China's Ministry of Transport, Hong Kong-based Conning Shipping, the operator of the "Star of Asia" cruise ship, has been granted special rights to operate the round-trip direct transport route between Shantou and Taiwan's Penghu and Kaohsiung on charter ships.
This is Guangdong Province's first tourist transport route for charter cruise ships carrying tourists to Taiwan. Shantou is the first city in Guangdong Province that has been approved to operate direct passenger charter shipping to Taiwan, and the second city to be specially approved to have a direct sea transport link with Taiwan after Shanghai in Chinese mainland.
At 10 am on the same day, a ceremony for the maiden voyage of the cruise ship sailing between Shantou and Taiwan was held at a quay in Zhuchi Harbor, Shantou. More than 400 people from all walks of life, hailing from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and Hong Kong attended the ceremony.
