At the end of 2008, the total length of all roads across the entire country was calculated to be 3.73 million kilometers. Remarkably, China has built 60,300 kilometers of highway in less than 30 years, ranking the country second in the world.
Reporters learned that from 2009 until the end of 2012, toll collection to repay loans on second-grade roads in eastern and central parts of China will be terminated step by step in an orderly manner. This will reduce the total length of this type of road across the country, and the total number of toll stations nationwide by about 60 percent. In western China, the decision to terminate toll collection will be determined by the provincial governments, including autonomous regions and municipalities, at their own discretion.
At present, toll collection to repay loans has been completely abolished on second-grade roads in both the initial group of 5 pilot provinces comprising Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Fujian and Jiangxi, and the second group of provinces comprising Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Hubei and Hunan.
