Three people were killed, two more injured, and nearly 3,000 others displaced in southwest China's Sichuan Province in a severe, days-long rainstorm earlier this week, said the local government department Friday.

The emergency response office with Dazhou City Government said it rained hard in parts of the city from Sunday through to Thursday, with more than 280,000 people being affected.

The civil affairs bureau of Daxian City said two of the dead were an elderly couple -- Li Zongjie, 70 and his wife Liu Zhaoxiu,72 -- from Dazhou Village in Xuanhan County. The couple was killed when their house collapsed under the concentrated rainfall. The exact date of their death is unknown.

The last death was Zhu Guangxing, a 56-year-old man from Baotaba Village in Kaijiang County. Zhu was struck by lightning strike and died at the scene when he was inspecting his rice field. The exact day of his death is unknown at this time.

Feng Yongcai, male and 38, and Liu Yongxiu, female and 70, both of whom were from Jinzhu Village in Xuanhan County, were injured seriously when their houses collapsed in a landslide caused by heavy rains. They are in stable condition, said the civil affairs bureau of Daxian City.

Many low-lying areas of the city were inundated in the concentrated downpour, including parts of the downtown districts of Dazhou City, which is in the northeast part of Sichuan.

The torrential rains also toppled 543 houses across the city, forcing 2,828 people to evacuate and affecting 20,600 hectares of crops.

All of the damaged roads have been repaired and the normal traffic has resumed.

Relief materials such as 780 cotton quilts, more than 3,000 clothes and 300 blankets have been sent to flood-stricken areas, said the emergency response office with Dazhou City Government.
