After the "ban on free plastic bags" took effect, a significant drop in the use of plastic shopping bags has been felt at various types of retail outlets. In particular, the ban has been proved most effective in supermarkets where plastic shopping bag consumption fell by over 75 percent.
For example, in 106 Wal-Mart outlets around China, the average drop in plastic shopping bag use has been over 80 percent.
In the past, around 1 million plastic shopping bags were consumed each day at the sales outlets of the Nonggongshang Supermarket Group of Shanghai, but now, the daily consumption has dropped to fewer than 100,000 bags, a decrease of 90 percent.
The use of plastic shopping bags has dropped by over 80 percent in supermarkets like "Meet all" of Taiyuan and Beijing Hualian Hypermarket. The drop has also exceeded 75 percent in provinces and autonomous regions including Qinghai, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang and Anhui.
Production and use of alternative products to be accelerated
Since the "ban on free plastic bags" took effect one year ago, its implementation has been positive on the whole, but some problems still exist.
For example, there are still some enterprises engaging in the production and sale of ultrathin plastic bags. Places such as farm product markets are still weak links in the implementation of the ban, and various phenomena constituting violations of the rule, such as the provision of ultrathin plastic bags, still exist.
It is necessary to find plastic bag alternatives and accelerate their production and use, for example, by promoting the use of shopping baskets or related products, to encourage farm product markets to reduce or stop the use of ultrathin plastic bags.
In addition, after the "ban on free plastic bags" took effect, a new situation emerged in which there has been an increase in the demand for trash bags. In response, the Standardization Administration of the People's Republic of China is currently speeding up the formulation of standards for trash bags and degradable trash bags and other products.
