Operating under the People's Daily, China Energy News is the first comprehensive newspaper in China's energy sector.

At the newspaper's opening ceremony, President of the People's Daily Zhang Yannong delivered a speech in which he announced that China Energy News is an important component in the People's Daily's construction of a modern media system, and a move to meet the new trend of demassification and objectification. He hopes that China Energy News will be committed to focusing on the energy industry; be authoritative and professional so as to more effectively publicize and implement state energy policies; properly guide public opinion on the energy industry and enhance China's international influence on energy issues.

Zhang Guobao, Vice-Chairman of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Director of the National Energy Administration, said in his speech that he strongly supports China Energy News to explore reporting on the energy industry and international energy news in particular. He also expressed an expectation that China Energy News will make its voice heard on the world's media stage on behalf of China's energy industry.
