One person was killed and 28 others were injured Sunday when an intercity bus overturned amid heavy rain in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, an official said.

The bus, which had 29 aboard, was headed for Bobai County from Nanning, the regional capital. It overturned in Qinzhou City at 10:20 a.m. as a storm was battering the area, said Lu Haisheng, vice mayor of Qinzhou.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others sustained serious injuries. All the injured were rushed to two hospitals in Qinzhou.

The bus was allowed to carry 39 people. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
