Suicide interrupts service on Beijing subway line 1

Passengers are stranded on the platform after a suicide interrupted service on Beijing Subway Line 1 on Friday, July 17, 2009.

A west-bound train was suspended at Nanlishilu station on Beijing's Subway Line 1 as a person committed suicide on Friday morning.

The person, whose identity was not known yet, jumped onto the tracks at about 8:25 a.m. and died on the spot.

Passengers who were stuck inside the stifling train compartments complained and some even tried to force the door open.

It took over ten minutes to pry open the doors of the train, and passengers then cleared out of the cars and had to wait on a crowded subway platform.

The train, bound for Pingguoyuan station, remained stopped on the tracks and passengers were directed to take public transportation on the ground.

Firemen arrived for maintenance, but heavy rain outside kept many passengers still crowding inside the platform.
