The International Grand Bazaar in Urumqi reopened Wednesday for the first time since the deadly riot in the city on July 5.

Around half of the 4,000 shops and booths in the bazaar in the capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region opened at around 11 a.m., said Wuxkur Yunus, deputy manager of the bazaar.

They would close for the day at 6 p.m., two and a half hours earlier than usual, he said.

Security was tightened as the bazaar administration doubled the number of security guards to 70, and knives were banned from sale, he said.

"So far, we have only received several hundred customers. Before the riot, we had more than 100,000 people everyday," he said.
