A concert commemorating the first anniversary of the Beijing 2008 Olympics was attended by over 5,000 Chinese and foreign VIPs including Liu Qi, member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and chairman of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCGO); and Hein Verbruggen, chairman of the former Coordination Commission of the Beijing Olympic Games.

The concert started at about 7:50 pm with the song "You and Me," the theme song of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, led by the young Smith from the US and the young Doudou from China.

The ceremony officially began following the song. Liu Qi said in his address that on August 8 2008, when the Olympic Flame was burning brightly in Beijing's night sky, the Chinese nation realized a century-long dream. With the great efforts made by the people in implementing the idea of a "Green Olympics, High-Tech Olympics and People's Olympics," Beijing not only realized the goal of "high-level Olympics with distinguishing features," but also presented an unparalleled Olympics to the world in presenting a democratic, open and progressive New China.

Liu said that the Beijing 2008 Olympics not only left many wonderful memories for the people, but also rich tangible and intangible cultural heritage to China. Although the world watched the Beijing Olympic flame go out, a new dream and hope rose in our hearts: We will retain the Olympic spirit in Beijing and let the Olympic wealth benefit Beijing forever.
