A 70-year-old retired college professor in Wuhan, Hubei province, was duped of 5,600 yuan ($820) when he tried purchasing equipment to monitor his wife's phone calls.
Wang responded to a text message, which advertised the sale of "mobile phone monitoring devices", after he suspected his 40-year-old wife of having an extra-marital affair.
Wang transferred the amount to a bank account he was provided. He never heard from the spammers again.
