The public bicycle service project in central China's Wuhan city was granted loan of 50 million yuan on Oct 22, 2009.
Preliminary calculation suggests that for every 10,000 bicycles used in the project, each one was rented by six different people a day. This will save 40,000 liters' fuel and reduce carbon emission by 100 tons.
The project started trial runs in Wuhan last year, with 15,000 bicycles put into use and 180,000 rental cards issued; and every day 60,000 citizens used the rental service.
The ultimate goal of Wuhan is to build 2,000 rental stands that cover the central area of the city. By 2011, a public bicycle rental system will be basically finalized.
