Drink driver admits killing two in NE China

A motorist in northeast China Thursday pleaded guilty to killing two people and injuring 23 while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Zhang Xijun, 50, also admitted charges of driving without a license and endangering public safety when he appeared at the Intermediate People's Court of Jixi, in Heilongjiang Province.

Zhang hit a pedestrian as he was driving through a market in Jixi city at 6 p.m. on Aug. 5. Attempting to flee the scene, he crashed into a crowd, killing two people and injuring another 22 people.

A total of 24 victims and their families, including the family of one of those killed, have accepted compensation deals with Zhang under the mediation of the Intermediate People's Court of Jixi.

Zhang, an employee of Jixi Coal Mining Machinery Limited, agreed to pay compensation totaling 1.17 million yuan (171,376 U.S. dollars).

Zhang apologized to the victims and their families in court.

Sentencing was deferred to a later date.
