The U.S.-based Forbes magazine recently released the list of the world's most densely-populated cities, in which Shenzhen with a population density of 17,150 people per square kilometer ranks fifth after Mumbai, Kolkata, Karachi and Lagos, becoming China's "densest" city.
According to the Forbes report, five Chinese cities– Shenzhen, Taipei, Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin - are among the world's top 20 densest cities. Shenzhen ranks fifth with a population density of 17,150 people per square kilometer, much higher Shanghai which has a density of 13,400 people per square kilometer and Beijing which has a density of 11,500 people per square kilometer. Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment center, takes the first position on the list, with a population density of 29,650 people per square kilometer.
Forbes also noted that for cities taking leading positions on the list, rapid urban development has caused their local infrastructures unable to meet their residents' demands. Residents in these cities therefore face issues such as traffic congestion and mostly lead a low quality of life with a low sense of well-being.
