Foxconn offers reward in probe into employee's death

Foxconn Technology Group, a unit of Taiwan electronics giant Hon Hai, is offering a 500,000-yuan (73,219 U.S. dollars) reward for information on the sudden death of a worker at a plant in south China on Saturday.
Ma Xiangqian, 19, was found lying near the stairway of company dormitory in Guanlan town, Shenzhen, at 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 23.
Doctors from Guanlan People's Hospital confirmed he was dead at the scene.
An initial police investigation suggested death by natural causes, but Ma's family believe Ma might have been beaten to death.
"We understand that Ma's family want to find the cause of death, so we offer the reward to anyone who can prove there was foul play," said Li Jinming, Foxconn administrative general manager.
Ma's sister Ma Hui said her brother had been picked on for damaging equipment due to not knowing correct work procedures and was later assigned to cleaning toilets, Guangzhou Daily reported Tuesday.
Ma, from central China's Henan Province, started working at Foxconn in November 2009 and handed in his notice Jan. 12.
He had not shown up for work since Jan. 20, said Li.
Ma's family was not informed of his death at first, but was told by Sun Cheng, a manager, that "Ma passed out and was under treatment," according to Guangzhou Daily.
"That was because we wanted to break it to Ma's family gently," said Li.
Foxconn, set up in 1988, has more than 700,000 employees worldwide and is the foremost provider of joint-design, joint-development, manufacturing, assembly and after-sales services to global computer, communication and consumer-electronics companies.
Another Foxconn employee in Shenzhen, Sun Danyong, committed suicide on July 16, 2009, during an investigation into the loss of a prototype of Apple's iPhone.
Foxconn reached a compensation deal with Sun's family. Foxconn made a one-off payment of 360,000 yuan to Sun's parents and also pays 30,000 yuan annually to support them.
