No damage had been reported so far for the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that hit the sea off the east coast of Taiwan's Hualien County Sunday afternoon, local fire-fighting authorities said.
Tremor was felt across Taiwan. Swaying was seen for some high-rise buildings in Taipei and Kaohsiung, the two biggest cities on the island.
Taiwan seismological expert Kuo Kai-wen said the earthquake should be normal release of energy caused by collision between the Euro-Asia plate and the Philippine plate.
The epicenter was located at 123.09 degrees east longitude and 23.35 degrees north latitude, with a depth of 15.5 kilometers, according to local meteorological authorities.
The strongest quakes were detected in Hualien, Taitung and Yilan counties, all measuring three on the Richter scale.
