China's police chief Meng Jianzhu on Saturday urged the country's police officers to be vigilant on public security to ensure a safe, happy and peaceful Spring Festival.

Meng, a State Councilor and Minister of Public Security, made the call when visiting on-duty police officers and security volunteers in Beijing, just one day ahead of the Spring Festival, or the Chinese lunar new year.

Calling the people "the most secure wall of steel," Meng thanked the volunteers for their contribution to Beijing's public stability, and urged the police to rely on the people when safeguarding Beijing's security.

He also urged fire-fighting departments to strengthen their efforts to ensure safety of the public when setting off fireworks.

The Spring festival is the most important traditional Chinese festival and an occasion for family reunions. It falls on Feb. 14 this year.
