Guangdong in need of 900,000 workers

According to data collected by Guangdong's human resources and social security departments at all levels, 3.16 million migrant workers from other provinces had returned to Guangdong after the Spring Festival by February 22, accounting for 45.7 percent of the total 6.92 million workers who returned to their hometowns for the Spring Festival. While, according to investigations, Guangdong's enterprises are currently in need of 900,000 workers.

The return rate increased by 3.9 percent year-on-year. At present, of the migrant workers who have returned to Guangdong, 98 percent are workers who went back to do their old jobs. According to the Department of Human Resources and Social Security of Guangdong Province (DHRSSGD) February 25, in general, the migrant worker flow is steady and orderly.

And according to investigations, the worker deficiency situation has 3 features. First, as many as 612,000 general workers, accounting for 68 percent of the total are needed. Second, technical workers, accounting for 32 percent of the total are needed. Third, most enterprises that need workers belong to labor-intensive industries such as garment, shoe and toy manufacturing industries.

After analysis, an official of the DHRSSGD said that the worker deficiency situation of some enterprises is caused by various factors including the recovering economy, fiercer regional competition, and the lagged industrial structure adjustment, and is also a normal result of the market's allocation of human resources.

The main reasons include: The demand for workers was strengthened due to increasing orders, migrant worker flow was divided due to fiercer regional competition, some migrant workers went elsewhere because China's central regions have become more attractive, the structural dislocation of supply and demand, among other reasons.

It is understood that Guangdong's governments, human resources and social security departments of all levels will adopt various measures to help enterprises deal with the worker shortage issue. They will continue the "Spring Warmth Activity in South Guangdong" and continue to comprehensively carry out "employment service month" activities in 21 districts of Guangdong to promote contact between enterprises and workers.

Meanwhile, for the "low salary and low attraction" issue of some enterprises, they will properly raise Guangdong's minimum salary standard and guide the enterprises to raise their salary levels and treatments, as well as improve their employees' production condition and living standards.
