The memorial assembly and theme photo exhibition "Mothers' Smiles" kicked off in Beijing yesterday to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Happiness Project, which aims to help impoverished mothers throughout China.

The Happiness Project was initiated in 1995 and is jointly sponsored by the China Population Welfare Foundation and the China Family Planning Association.

The Happiness Project raised 660 million yuan funds cumulatively and helped 220,000 poor mothers in the past 15 years.

Gu xiulian, director of the Happiness Project committee, said China still has at least 10 million poor mothers that desperately need help. The Happiness Project strives to raise no less than 500 million yuan and collect goods and materials to help more than 150,000 poor mothers this year.
