The grand opening ceremony of the industrial development zone in the Liangjiang New Area was held on July 18, marking the official construction of a national advanced manufacturing base in Chongqing, which is estimated to have an industrial output of 1 trillion yuan by 2020, according to Huang Qifan, the mayor of Chongqing.

The industrial zone in the Liangjiang New Area covers an area of 170 square kilometers, which includes the Yufu modern logistics zone and the Longshi advanced manufacturing zone. It will set up strategic emerging industries layouts to form the manufacturing base.

The Longshi zone is striving to build a state-level power equipment base for wind power generator systems; develop key components and manufacture auxiliary parts; form layout clusters for the thin film photovoltaic industry; produce nuclear components; develop main equipment and related electricity transmission and distribution equipments; construct a shipbuilding base and primarily develop special shipping products, including stainless steel chemical vessels, liquefied petroleum and natural gas ships and luxury yachts.

The Yufu zone plans to build the most important waterway, railway transport base and port logistics distribution center in western China.

It is reported that, currently, three significant industries, namely track traffic, wind power equipment and alternative energy vehicles, have been set up in the Liangjiang New Area. Leading enterprises, including the Changan International Corporation and the Changchun Railway Vehicles Company, have settled in the industrial zone.

The Liangjiang New Area in Chongqing is the third sub-provincial level economic development zone after the Shanghai Pudong New Area and the Tianjin Binhai New Area.

The Liangjiang New Area is located in the north of Chongqing main city area and east of the Jialing River, covering an area of 1,200 square kilometers.

The new area will support the development of five strategic industries: railways, electrical equipment, new-energy vehicles, national defense and electronic information, sources said.

National-level research and development headquarters, a major scientific research base and a data disaster recovery center will also be built in the new area.
