The new generation of migrant workers in cities pursues rights and interests not only in the economic sphere, but also in spirituality, according to results of a survey released by the Beijing Federation of Trade Unions on Sunday.

They also have stronger awareness of safeguarding legal rights and employment. Employee-employer relationships, living conditions and identity are their greatest concerns, Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.

The new generation of migrant workers is the main force of industries such as construction, catering, security, housekeeping and care workers. They generally have received a junior high school education or above and expect scientific and humanistic management. In particular, they are eager to be respected in the workplace.

But their income and participation in social insurance are low and labor disputes caused by non-normalized labor contracts are frequent. Furthermore, they are facing problems, such as long work hours, poor leisure life and housing. They even feel it is difficult to integrate themselves into urban life.

They also believe the most important tasks of trade unions are helping the poor, helping workers to find employment, equal negotiation, signing collective labor contracts, wage negotiation and mass activities, according to the report.

The report also says the goals of the new generation of migrant workers have transformed from simply making a living to seeking happiness and sense of belonging; from endurance and persistence to pursuit of equality. Their spiritual support has also changed from undertaking family responsibilities to realizing self-worth.
