As of July 26, the box office of "Aftershock," a film about the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, has pulled in more than 200 million yuan (about 29.5 million U.S. dollars) at the Chinese box office since it opened on July 22, according to data from the State Administration of Radio Film and Television.

"Aftershock" set its first box office record on its release day when it earned 36.2 million yuan, which is the highest box office return for a domestically-produced movie on its opening day. It is on track to become the biggest box office hit for a Chinese movie in the domestic market

The film's director Feng Xiaogang is satisfied with the box office result so far and he said the total box office may be more than 500 million yuan (about 73.8 million U.S. dollars).

The movie is about a family torn apart by the 1976 Tangshan earthquake and reunited 32 years later in 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
