Hong Kong Jockey Club donates 5 million HK dollars for Gansu relief work

The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced on Thursday that it would donate 5 million HK dollars ( 643,000 U.S. dollars) to support relief work after mudslides in Zhouqu county, Gansu province caused widespread damage.

The Club said in a statement that it will maintain close contact with agencies working in the affected area and follow the situation closely. It will also learn about the effective channels that would benefit the victims.

Founded in 1884, the Hong Kong Jockey Club has become one of Hong Kong's best known organizations. Aside from providing the public with horse-racing and other entertainment events, the Club is also a major non-governmental community benefactor. It donates more than 1 billion HK dollars a year to charitable and community projects.

The death toll from the massive mudslides in Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, had risen to 1,407 as of 4 p.m. Friday, with 358 still missing, the provincial government said. Extensive rescue and relief efforts are continuing.
