Chinese President Hu Jintao said Thursday in Sydney that China is willing to step up cooperation in product quality and safety with other parties to improve quality and guarantee safety in international trade.

He made the pledge in a speech delivered at the business summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum which opened Thursday in Australia's largest city of Sydney.

Hu is here on a state visit to Australia and will attend the 15th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, scheduled for Sept.8-9.

China takes quality and safety of its export products very seriously and follows a highly responsible approach toward it, he told a gathering of APEC business leaders.

"From product manufacturing to transportation and import and export, we are making every effort to ensure product quality and safety," he said.

"And we are enhancing relevant legislation, law enforcement, supervision and regulation," he told the business leaders.

The two-day APEC business summit, an important forum of the APEC meetings, will focus on trade, market and structural issues, energy, clean development and climate change as well as education.

The theme of the business summit is "strengthening our community, building a sustainable future."
