SYDNEY: China is preparing for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's likely visit to the country this the year and hopes it will further bolster bilateral ties.
President Hu Jintao stressed the importance of improving bilateral ties during his brief conversation with Abe at the 15th Economic Leaders Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
Hu said the improvement and good momentum in the Sino-Japanese ties have been welcomed not only by the Chinese and Japanese, but also by people across the world.
Since this year is the 35th anniversary of the normalization of the bilateral ties, China and Japan have held a series of exchange activities, Hu said. More such events are in the pipeline.
The president said he hoped the two sides will coordinate well to make the programs a success and further strengthen their friendship.
Abe corroborated Hu and said progress has been made on a wide range of issues, especially in the important fields of defense and security.
Hu and Abe touched upon the Korean Peninsula denuclearization, too, with the Japanese prime minister praising China's efforts as the chair of the Six-Party Talks.
According to Japanese foreign ministry officials, President Hu sought Japan's cooperation to make the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games a success, and Abe agreed to it.
Meeting with Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country's policy towards China will not change even after he steps down from his post next year.
At a meeting with Hu on the sidelines of the APEC forum on Saturday, Putin said bilateral ties have reached the highest level and "there is no doubt that Russian policy towards China will not change in the coming years".
Hu said he was happy to meet with Putin for the fifth time this year. The Russian president has been working hard since assuming office to strengthen Sino-Russian ties.
