The Tokyo District Court ruled on Friday that the Japanese author and the publisher of a book on the Nanjing Massacre to pay a total of 4 million yen (about 34,800 U.S. dollars) in compensation to Chinese woman Xia Shuqin for libel.

The presiding judge ruled that the book damaged Xia's reputation by giving readers the impression that she is not a victim of the Massacre while she actually is.

"Its interpretation of materials is inappropriate, bringing about no valuable academic results, and the court cannot recognize any truth in the book or any reasons that can be believed as truth," the judge was quoted by Kyodo News as reading the sentence.

The book, written by Asia University Professor Shudo Higashinakano and published by Tendensha in 1998, has been translated into English and Chinese. About 13,000 copies of the book have been sold in Japan.

Xia, whose family members were killed in the Nanjing Massacre, is the figure in a document written by an American priest. However the ridiculous book said she isn't.
