Since the two countries established diplomatic relations 15 years ago, China and Turkmenistan have been increasingly stepping up their friendly bilateral cooperative relations, making great achievements in cooperation on regional and international issues.
In July this year, Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov paid his first state visit to Beijing after becoming president in February. He signed a joint statement with Chinese President Hu Jintao, identifying a clear way to consolidate and further develop friendly cooperative relations between the two countries.
Highly valuing the relationship with China, Berdymukhamedov has said several times that China is a cooperative partner that Turkmenistan can trust and developing all-round friendly cooperative relations with China is in line with the fundamental interests of the two peoples.
On the Taiwan issue, Turkmenistan unswervingly supports China's peaceful reunification and is committed to the one-China policy, opposing any form of "Taiwan independence" and Taiwan's participation in any international and regional organizations in which only sovereign states can be involved.
China has always supported Turkmenistan in its choice of development under its own condition, and also backs its policy of permanent neutrality, which is constructive in maintaining the healthy and stable development of the region.
China and Turkmenistan have made progress in economic and trade cooperation. The signing of the agreement in August 2006 on economic and technological cooperation has significantly promoted the bilateral economic and trade development. The two countries, with mutual complementarity in fields such as markets, technology and resources, have been pushing forward cooperative projects in key areas such as energy, transportation and telecommunications, etc.
In the first six months of 2007, China's volume of imports from Turkmenistan increased by 273 percent.
Energy cooperation has been given priority by the two governments. In August this year, China and Turkmenistan launched a gas pipeline project in Turkmenistan's Amu-darya River region, which is China's largest gas exploration project abroad.
President Berdymukhamedov said recently that the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline project would give impetus to the concrete and all-round development of bilateral trade and energy cooperation, and become a key element in promoting regional stability and development.
On security issue, China and Turkmenistan have also reached consensuses. Since the signing of the coordination and cooperation agreement on combating terrorism, separatism and extremism in April 2006, the two sides have strengthened coordination and cooperation in law enforcements and combating the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism, including the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces, making contributions to peace, security and stability in the two countries as well as the Central Asian region.
