The newly appointed Nepali ambassador to China Tanka Karki said here Wednesday that the friendly relationship between Nepal and China could be considered a model for foreign relations.

In an interview with Xinhua in Kathmandu before leaving for China to assume his office, Ambassador Karki expressed the confidence that he would succeed in performing his duty to further enhance bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.

"China has always displayed goodwill towards Nepal for which we are always grateful," said Karki, adding it is noteworthy that China has never interfered in domestic affairs of Nepal.

"The relationship between our two countries which began many centuries ago is based on a secure foundation and ... the five principles of peaceful co-existence between nations," he said.

Saying that Nepal is always committed to one-China policy, he expressed commitment that Nepali land would never be used by anybody to conspire against China. He also recalled the fact that Nepal had always supported China in the United Nations and reaffirmed that it would do the same regarding the policies of China in the future.

Displaying great admiration towards the economic growth that China has achieved during recent years, he said that Nepal should learn a lot from China in the area of socio-economic development.

"As a closest neighbor, Nepal should learn a lot and also reap benefit from the global economic giant like China."

Encouraged by the growing number of Chinese tourists arriving in Nepal during the recent years, Karki said that Nepal, with its natural beauty and cultural prosperity, could be an attractive destination for Chinese tourists.

He also said Nepal could use the opportunity to attract a large number of Chinese tourists.

"I would try my best to promote Nepal as a tourist destination among Chinese people," he said, adding that "At present, more and more tourists are visiting Lhasa through newly constructed railway link and we should try to work towards making Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha the final destination for the Chinese tourists."

He also expressed optimism towards making Nepal a transit point between Indo-Chinese trade. "Nepal, situated between the world's economic giants China and India, should be able to harness maximum benefit through its geographical location."
