The new Australian leadership will bring no significant changes to the country's policy towards China, according to a Chinese expert.
"The Sino-Australian relationship has been developing smoothly during Howard's term and such a trend has become part of the Australian foreign strategy," said Zhai Kun, a senior researcher with China Institute of Contemporary International Relations.
"No matter who wins the election, the goal of maintaining good ties with China will not be changed," Zhai said.
China is Australia's largest trading partner while the US is Australia's close ally. How to deal with relations with the two countries will be a challenge for the new Australian prime minister, Zhai said.
Being an expert on China, Rudd may become the bridge between East and West, Zhai said, adding that the new leader might also become an adviser on China-related issues for US leaders.
Though Rudd has vowed to pull Australian troops out of Iraq and sign the Kyoto climate treaty, the close relationship between the two countries will not be changed, Zhai said.
