Nepal's entire socio-economic sector has witnessed radical change due to affordable goods imported from China in recent years.
In Nepal, one can not deny the fact that attractive prices and good quality Chinese electronic goods such as television, radio and computer have brought a revolutionary transformation in the area of information and communication among the masses living under poverty line in the country.
Owning affordable television sets imported from China, the number of television stations are also mushrooming in the country, thus bringing political awareness among the people living in remotest parts of the country.
Talking to Xinhua on Wednesday, Somesh Verma, program producer at Kantipur TV network says, "Affordable television sets has brought in communication at the hands of common people who could not have afforded it earlier due to the high price."
Stating that affordable television sets imported from China has actually changed the whole dynamics of information to Nepalese people, Verma said, "It has helped creating awareness among common people to totally different level since now people in villages areas updated and aware as their richer counterparts living in cities."
Indeed, it was beyond one's imagination till few years back that the people living in the remotest part of the country where it takes almost a week to reach daily newspaper published in urban areas due to lack of roads can now watch proceedings taking place in the parliament live from their room.
"With cheaper means of mass communication, the less privileged people can now enjoy the rights to information, one of the fundamental rights," Verma said.
According to Prajwol Shrestha, owner of an electronic goods showroom in Nepali capital Kathmandu, "Till five years back, having a television set at home used to be luxury but now the cheaper sets offered by Chinese companies has made it possible for poor people from remote areas to afford it."
"I still remember that a Japanese made television used to cost nearly 1,000 U.S. dollars till 10 years ago but one can buy a decent television set for less than 50 dollars these days," Prajwol said.
Besides, cheaper mobile phones offered by Chinese companies also made it possible for Nepalese with less than 300 dollars per capita income to purchase one.
Affordable goods imported from China also provided an opportunity to live a better life to the masses whose lives below poverty line.
"Branded items could be practical for high income group living in western countries, but for the people living in third world countries, goods produced in China opened a door to explore new things at the age of information," Prajwol added. Source: Xinhua
