Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Friday extended congratulations on the convening of a United Nations meeting to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
On behalf of the Chinese people, Wen expressed his warm congratulations on the meeting held by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People at the UN headquarters in New York Thursday.
The Palestinian issue is the core of the Middle East issue, Wen said in his congratulatory message, adding that China remains committed to the resumption of the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, and supports the early restart of the Middle East peace process.
China hopes the concerned parties settle the Palestinian issue through political negotiations on the basis of relevant UN resolutions and the "land for peace" principle to create an independent Palestinian state living side by side in peace with the state of Israel.
An early settlement of the Palestinian issue is not only an ardent wish of peoples in various countries of the Middle East region and also a common aspiration of the international community, Wen said.
As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, he said, China will work unremittingly with the international community to push for the comprehensive and fair settlement of the Palestinian issue at an early date and promote peace, stability and development in the Middle East region.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted in 1977 designating Nov. 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. On that day, in 1947, the assembly passed a resolution on the partition of Palestine.
