U.S. official stresses important ties with China

The relations between the United State and China are very important and both sides should learn to work together to find solutions to difficult problems in the world, a senior official of the U.S. State Department said here on Monday.

Speaking at a press briefing at the U.S. embassy here, Nicholas Burns, Under Secretary of States for Political Affairs, told Xinhua that U.S.-China ties are fundamentally important for both countries, and Washington seeks to engage with and work with China as the bilateral ties between the two countries are based on a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, the nuclear problems in the Korean Peninsula and Iran.

Burns, who arrived here Sunday night on a four-day trip to Singapore and Australia, praised China for its efforts with Washington to convince North Korea to give up its nuclear program.

Burns believed that China and the Unite States, both countries can and have to learn to work together, share the responsibility to find solutions to difficult problems such as the problems in Iran and Sudan.

The U.S. official stressed that China and the United States enjoy perfect relationship, and although there exists differences between the two countries, both sides can work together to contribute to resolve international problems.

Burns also mentioned his meetings with Singapore officials, saying that his country values the city state as a strategic partner, particularly its support and contributions to the efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As for his trip to Australia, Burns said that he will meet with Australian leaders of the new government, and the United States wants to keep its excellent and close relationship with Australia.
