Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) held a conference in Beijing on Wednesday to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the United States.

Xu Kuangdi, vice-chairman of National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, hailed in his speech the remarkable achievements scored in the China-U.S. relations over the past 28 years.

The two nations have held clearer strategic position of each other, with richer strategic content of bilateral relations and rapid development of exchange and cooperation at the current stage, said Xu, who is also the chairman of China-U.S. People's Friendship Association.

Xu said the development of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative relations have brought substantial benefits for the two peoples, and boost the peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.

He noted that the two nations should further enhance dialogue and exchange, so as to boost strategic mutual trust.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said in his address to the conference that the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States during his administration had significant influence over the two countries, Asia and the world at large.

He reiterated that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an integral part of China. He hopes that the U.S. government both now and in the future will continue to adhere to the policy.

Cater said he would continue his effort to promote mutual understanding between the two peoples and make contributions to the development of bilateral ties.

Vice president of the CPAFFC Li Xiaolin, U.S. Ambassador to China Clark Randt, together with some 100 scholars, officials and university students attended the conference.

China and the United States signed the joint communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations on Dec.16, 1978. The two nations forged diplomatic ties on Jan.1, 1979.
