Germany should maintain a sound partnership with China through dialogue and cooperation as China is playing an increasingly important role in the international arena, former German general consulate to Shanghai, Dr. Wolfgang Roehr, said Tuesday.
China has turned into an independent, confident partner with a decisive role in many global issues, Roehr told a seminar on "China's new role in the world" initiated by the German Council on Foreign Relations and German Development Bank.
Cooperation between China and Germany, including the economic and technical assistance offered by Germany to China, is in the interest of Germany, said Roehr, who currently serves as a special ambassador to the campaign of "Germany and China -- Moving Ahead Together."
The campaign was kicked off in August last year under the joint patronage of German President Horst Koehler and Chinese President Hu Jintao, highlighting the mutual commitment to partnership between the two countries.
Mei Zhaorong, former Chinese ambassador to Germany, said China's prime task remains to eliminate poverty and to seek fair and reasonable recognition by the international community.
China is developing in a peaceful way, as it has pledged, and is continuing to contribute to world peace and stability, said Mei, also director of the Institute of World Development (IWD).
Martin Posth, one of the founders of Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Company, said China's mode of development, despite all the differences with the west, may provide opportunities rather than dangers as feared by some western politicians.
China's experience is especially important to other developing countries which are coming through similar problems, said Posth. Source: Xinhua
