President-elect Lee Myung-bak said Thursday the new South Korean government will work to elevate ties between China and his country to a new level.
China has become South Korea's largest trading partner and the biggest receiver of investment from his country, although the two countries established diplomatic relations only 15 years ago, said Lee at a luncheon party for foreign journalists.
The new government will endeavor to strengthen Sino-South Korean ties in such areas as the economy and push forward free trade negotiations with its neighboring countries including China and Japan, he told journalists.
He expressed appreciation to Chinese President Hu Jintao for sending him a congratulatory telegram on his election and the recent visit to South Korea by Wang Yi, the special envoy of the Chinese government.
Lee won the presidential elections on Dec. 19, 2007 and will take office as president on Feb. 25, 2008. Source: Xinhua
