The groundbreaking ceremony of Gaoyang Chinatown was held in the city of Gaoyang, South Korea on January 28th. More than 200 people, including the Chinese Cultural Centre's Executive Director, Wang Xinming, and Gaoyang City Mayor Jiang Xianxi attended the ceremony. Jiang Shenghuan, president of the Seoul Chinatown Development Company which is responsible for the construction, said that it will make Gaoyang Chinatown South Korea's largest Chinatown.

According to Jiang Shenghuan, different from Chinatowns in other countries, Gaoyang Chinatown's construction carries investment from South Korean enterprises. Construction work has been divided into two stages: in the first stage, expected to finish by the end of 2009, a three-storey underground and five stories above-ground will be built to create a traditional, commercial city 60,000 square meters in area. The city will not only have traditional Chinese restaurants and shops with costumes and arts and crafts; but also will have theaters specialized in performing acrobatics, Beijing opera and traditional Chinese music and art. The second stage of construction will begin late this year, and is expected to finish by the end of 2012. There will be six stories underground and 56 stories above-ground to create a comprehensive, commercial city with an area of 430,000 square meters. The city will set up hotels, a writing room and corresponding facilities for teaching Chinese, and cultural performances.
