Gu Xiulian, President of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), said here on Sunday that Olympics is the focal point for current China-UK women's exchanges.
Gu, also vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, made the remarks on the eve of the China-UK Women's Cultural Festival to be launched on Monday. Beijing and London will host the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012respectively, thus Olympics has become a topical issue for China and Britain, she said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua. As an active and important force in the course of preparations for the games, women from the two countries have made great contributions, she said, adding women athletes will also play a critical role during the upcoming games.
At the moment, said the ACWF president, there are lots of issues of common interest for women from both sides, hence "women and Olympics" has become the theme for the week-long China-UK Women's Cultural Festival.
In the past few years, the ACWF has launched many cultural exchange programs in different countries across the world and women's cultural festival has become a brand for foreign exchanges. The programs, according to Gu, have contributed greatly to the exchanges and collaborations with women organizations and institutions from other countries, helping the world have a more objective and overall understanding about China.
Women has always been an "indispensable force" to world peace and development, said Gu, who believes the coming festival in Britain will surely promote the friendship and cooperation between the two peoples, particularly, between women of the two countries, infiltrating more vigor to the development of Sino-British comprehensive strategic partnership.
