More foreign leaders have sent messages to Chinese President Hu Jintao, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Wu Bangguo, and Premier Wen Jiabao, offering their sympathies for the recent problems caused by heavy snowfalls in China.
Foreign leaders who have sent messages recently included Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, Peruvian President Alan Garcia, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, Cameroonian President Paul Biya, President of the Central African Republic Francois Bozize, President of Guinea-Bissau Joao Bernardo Vieir, Vanuatu's President Kalkot Mataskelekele, Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor, Gabonese President Omar Bongo Ondimba, President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sarkissian, and Sri Lanka Parliament Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara.
In their messages, the leaders extended their appreciation of the Chinese government's resolute efforts in fighting the natural disaster and rebuilding homes in the affected areas.
They expressed the belief that the Chinese government and people have the full capacity to return production and life in the disaster-hit areas to normalcy as soon as possible.
Maltese Foreign Minister Michael Frendo, Acting Foreign Minister of the Central African Republic Sylvain Maliko, and Trinidad and Tobago's Foreign Ministry have also sent sympathy messages.
The Czech government has decided to provide aid of 1.5 million koruna (about 87,000 U.S. dollars) to China's disaster-hit areas.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Wednesday that the Chinese government and people thank those governments and peoples who care about and support China's disaster relief efforts.
Heavy snow, icy rain and prolonged low temperatures have ravaged southern China over the past month.
A total of 21 provincial-level areas have been affected, with Hunan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Anhui, Hubei, Zhejiang, Sichuan and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region being the worst hit by the severe weather.
