The raw materials used in the China-made, allegedly-tainted frozen mackerel sold in Japan were imported, China's quality watchdog confirmed on Friday.
The mackerel was imported from Denmark and all supplementary materials except salt were provided by the Japanese Kouzai Bussan Co. Ltd., said the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).
Such a statement was made earlier this week by Miao Qiang, president of the Chinese processing company, identified as Weihai Yuwang Aquatic Foods Co. Ltd., based in the eastern Shandong Province.
The administration also confirmed processing techniques for the exported mackerel were provided by the Japanese company, which had sent staff to supervise the processing.
The AQSIQ said it had halted exports by the company and dispatched investigators to the factory after learning about the case.
A Japanese non-governmental testing organization detected dichlorvos in frozen mackerel processed in and imported from the Shandong company, the Japanese media reported on Monday.
Previous checks by local inspectors found no such pesticide in samples of materials, packages, disinfectant and detergent used in the processing, the AQSIQ said.
Miao said his company had been processing products in strict accordance with both Chinese and Japanese food sanitation standards and had never bought, stored or used dichlorvos in its workshops.
