Australian Olympic Committee spokesman Mike Tancred said Friday he was confident that the security for the athletes of the Beijing Olympic Games was sufficient.
"The security and safety of the 10,500 athletes who go to the Olympic Games is the responsibility of the host nation and we're very satisfied with the security precautions that China has in place for the Olympics for our team," he said.
"We don't think Wednesday's incident was directed at Westerners. We feel this was a lone incident, a lone person with obviously some issues," he said in a statement.
"It was just unfortunate that some Australians got caught up in it," he added.
The Australian government believes there was nothing to suggest the Australians were specifically targeted, he said.
Ten Australian travel agents returned home on Friday after their tour bus was seized by a hijacker in China's north western city of Xi'an on Wednesday. Nine of them were quickly released, but a 48-year-old woman and a translator were held captive for several hours by the hijacker, who was eventually shot dead by police. Source: Xinhua
