The old city walls of Pingyao

Pingyao,China: Sometimes the old ways just work better

As today's China is developing and growing, the big cities are becoming more modern, and even the older parts of cities are constantly undergoing renovation. Where is the older part of China that first drew me here? I realized that I had to leave the big cities of Beijing and Shanghai to see how the past still has a say today to China. In February 2006, I visited Pingyao with some friends to see what this old, walled-in city had to offer.

Construction doesn’t get in the way of daily life

When we first entered the walled-in city, we had entered from what is the newer Pingyao. Within these cold, stone city walls, it appeared that time had not passed, and that we were locked into a particular time period. As we walked along the maze of streets, we passed wooden doors decorated with vertical red Spring Festival couplets, small restaurants and shops selling services and wares. The stone architecture was simple, and there was no rooftop blocking the sky.
