The Irish government announced on Wednesday that it does not support Taiwan's planned referendum on UN membership in the name of Taiwan.
In a statement released in Dublin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern said his government expressed concern about Taiwan's election due to take place on March 22, and, in particular, the planned referendum on UN membership in the name of Taiwan.
"At this time it is vital that any form of unilateral action that might undermine the status quo is avoided and I therefore do not support the holding of this referendum," he said.
"It has been our consistent hope that the Taiwan issue will be resolved peacefully and through constructive dialogue between the parties concerned," the statement added.
