On March 27, Vietnam and China held a ceremony in Nanning to mark the completion and launch of an international land cable transmission project by the China Netcom Group and Vietnam's largest international carrier, VTI. The system's launch has created a new international information superhighway between China and the ASEAN. China now has the capacity to communicate with Vietnam and Southeast Asian countries and regions, and to promote cooperation within the China - ASEAN Free Trade District.
The international fiber optic cable extends from Pingxiang, Guangxi to the Vietnamese side; enters Vietnam through two ports at Friendship Gateway and Puzhai; and links China with other ASEAN countries via Vietnam.
