A total of 33 press organizations from 18 countries gathered in Beijing on Sunday to discuss new technologies and standards in the development of press.

It is the first time that the International Press Telecommunication Council (IPTC) convenes its working conference in China. During the six-day meeting, representatives of news organizations worldwide will discuss ways to boost information exchanges and confer the Beijing Olympic organizing committee on the organization and preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games.

The conference was sponsored by China's Xinhua News Agency. Addressing the welcome reception, Xinhua Vice President Lu Wei said that since its access to the IPTC, Xinhua has always advocated to the research and application of press technology standards. It will continue to support and participate in the development and spread of technology standard.

In a bid to improve the lack of information in developing countries, Lu called for increased exchanges among press organizations worldwide, enhancing research on new technologies for information spread, offering opportunities for developing countries to learn and get grip on information and technologies.

He also advocated closer cooperation among press organizations to promote updating of news technology standards.
