Peter Batchelor, Minister for Energy and Resources in Victoria's Parliament, said on Wednesday that there is great potential for China and Australia to cooperate in clean energy technology.
He made this statement in an interview with Xinhua.
He said both sides should seek more opportunities, in particular for cooperation on the use of brown coal cleaning technology, carbon capture, carbon sequestration technologies, as well as renewable energy.
Brown coal will produce more carbon dioxide when alight due to its higher water content. Since both China and Australia have large reserves of lignite, both must come up with a way to use such resources in a cleaner way to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
A coal-fired power plant, jointly developed by both countries and with an installed capacity of 500,000 kilowatts, will be built in Melbourne.
Peter Batchelor visits China with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
