The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has formally announced the opening of a new route between China and Europe. This route will reduce air traffic congestion during the Beijing Olympic Games. The distance between Shanghai and Europe will be shortened by 111 kilometers; and the flight time between Shanghai and Europe will be shortened. Many airlines will increase Shanghai's Pudong Airport flights during the period of the Olympic Games; and 900 flights are expected in and out of the airport eveyday during the Olympic Games, according to the Oriental Morning Post.
IATA said that the most prominent aspect of the new route is that flights from Europe to Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong will no longer have to fly over Beijing.
