China hopes France would squarely face the problems that have risen in bilateral relations and work together to eliminate disruptions and push forward relations between the two countries, a senior Chinese leader said in Beijing Friday.
Jia Qinglin, National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) chairman, said the pivotal political base of sound bilateral relations lies in mutual understanding and support on major issues of each other's concern.
He made the remarks when meeting with Christian Poncelet, the French Senate president, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Friday afternoon.
Jia said Sino-French relations recently encountered some difficulties and negative factors. He pointed out the two sides should treasure the hard-won good situation of bilateral links cultivated by several generations of leaders in both countries.
He said Sino-French relations had witnessed generally sound growth in recent years, noting the two have maintained regular contact and improved political trust. The two countries had conducted fruitful cooperation in such fields as aviation, nuclear power and railway, and coordination on major international issues.
Jia expressed appreciation of France's long-term adherence to the one-China policy and its opposition to "Taiwan independence" and "Tibet independence".
Noting the contact between the CPPCC and the French Senate had become an important part of the all-round strategic partnership, he said the CPPCC was ready to step up exchanges and cooperation with the Senate so as to enhance mutual understanding and friendship of the two countries and two peoples.
Poncelet said the current China visit by the multi-party Senate delegation aimed to promote friendship between the two countries, since the French people cherished profound and good feelings toward the Chinese people. All political parties in France attached importance to relations with China.
Noting the Olympic torch relay was disrupted in Paris visit and that wheelchair athlete Jin Jing was attacked, Poncelet said the extreme activities of a small group had Parisians in distress and regret. He said the French people opposed tying sports with politics and wished the Beijing Olympics a total success. Source:Xinhua
